Once upon a time, there lived an old man named Yugong in northern China. In front of his house stood two huge mountains, Taihang and Wangwu, which blocked his family’s way to the outside world. Every time they wanted to go out, they had to walk a long and tiring detour.

One day, Yugong called his family together and said, “These mountains are such a nuisance. Let’s work together to move them away so that our children and grandchildren can have an easy life.” His wife doubted, “With our strength, even moving a small hill is hard. How can we move these giants? And where will we put the rocks and soil?” Yugong replied, “We can carry them to the sea—it’s big enough to hold everything.”

So, Yugong, his sons, and grandsons started digging. They used baskets to carry rocks and soil, taking turns day after day, year after year. A wise man named Zhisou laughed at them, “You’re old and weak—you can’t even break a small stone. How silly to try moving mountains!”

Yugong sighed, “You’re so short-sighted. I may die, but my sons will carry on; my grandsons will follow my sons, and this will go on forever. As long as we keep going, the mountains won’t grow taller. Why can’t we move them?”

His perseverance moved the gods. The Heavenly Lord sent two immortals to carry the mountains away. From then on, the area was no longer blocked.

The spirit lives on: Yugong’s story isn’t just about moving mountains. It teaches us that persistence crushes obstacles, that long-term effort defeats even the greatest challenges, and that collective will can achieve the impossible. It’s a reminder that no goal is too far if we keep going, generation after generation.

从前，中国北方有位老人叫愚公。他家门前有两座大山 —— 太行和王屋，挡住了家人外出的路。每次出门，他们都得绕很远的路，又累又不方便。

一天，愚公召集家人说：“这两座山太碍事了。咱们一起把它们移走，让子孙后代能轻松出行。” 他的妻子疑惑道：“凭咱们这点力气，连小土坡都动不了，怎么移走大山？挖出来的石头泥土往哪放？” 愚公说：“运到海里去 —— 大海能装下一切。”

于是，愚公带着儿子、孙子们开始挖山。他们用筐子运石头泥土，日复一日、年复一年地轮流劳作。有个叫智叟的机智人嘲笑他们：“你都这么大岁数了，连块小石头都砸不碎，还想移山？太傻了！”

愚公叹道：“你太目光短浅了。我死了，有儿子；儿子死了，有孙子；子子孙孙无穷无尽。只要咱们坚持下去，山不会再长高，总有一天能移平。”

他的执着感动了天帝，天帝派了两位神仙把山背走了。从此，那里再也没有阻碍了。

精神升华：愚公移山的故事不止是 “移山”，更告知我们 ——持之以恒能战胜一切障碍，长期的努力能攻克最大的挑战，集体的意志能实现看似不可能的目标。它提醒我们：只要一代又一代坚持下去，再远的目标也能抵达。
