一，paper

adj. 纸做的，纸质的；书面的，印刷的；纸上的

research paper，核心目标是传播创新观点，遵循“IMRAD”结构（引言、方法、结果、讨论）或严格的格式，篇幅精简，其内容可以是阶段性研究成果，时效性更强，一般用于学术会议、期刊投稿、课程作业。（A research paper is more extensive and involves in-depth research and analysis of various sources and requires presenting findings or arguments based on research，being sually more formal and objective in tone compared to an essay, and aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic and often requires the use of citations and references to support the writer's claims.）

thesis 和 dissertation，一般指提出并验证新的学术见解、基于原创性研究提出新的研究成果、篇幅较长（一般为数千至数万字）、结构规范、展示系统性研究能力、涉及深度严谨的学术研究、与高等教育阶段获取学位相关的论文，常译为“学位论文”或“毕业论文”。

在英式英语中，本科和硕士论文叫做dissertation，博士论文用thesis；

在美式英语中，本科和硕士论文用thesis，博士论文用dissertation。
